September often feels like a reset.
Summer vacations wind down. School starts again. Schedules become more structured, and many of us begin paying closer attention to exercise, nutrition, and perhaps a few extra pounds that appeared over the summer.
And sooner or later, someone says:
“I guess my metabolism just isn’t what it used to be.”
For decades, we’ve been told that metabolism inevitably slows as we enter our 30s, 40s, and 50s.
But newer research suggests the story is more complicated.
Aging certainly changes our bodies, but your metabolism may not deserve all the blame.

1. Your Metabolism Doesn’t Suddenly Crash at 40
One of the largest studies of human energy expenditure found something surprising.
After accounting for body size and composition, researchers found that total daily energy expenditure remains relatively stable from roughly age 20 through 60, before gradually declining later in life.
That doesn’t mean our bodies don’t change during middle age.
It means age alone may not explain those changes as much as we’ve been led to believe.
2. We Often Move Less Without Realizing It
Think about how much you moved when you were younger.
Walking across a college campus. Playing with children. Working physical jobs. Taking stairs. Doing yard work. Simply being on your feet more often.
As life changes, these small movements can quietly disappear.
Exercise matters, but so does everything we do outside the gym.
Walking, gardening, cleaning, taking the stairs, and simply getting up from a chair all contribute to our total daily energy expenditure.
Sometimes what feels like a “slower metabolism” may partly be a less active lifestyle.
3. Muscle Becomes Increasingly Important
Muscle isn’t just about looking strong.
It supports movement, glucose regulation, physical independence, and metabolic health.
As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important, especially if our activity levels decrease.
This is one reason resistance training deserves a place alongside walking and cardiovascular exercise.
Current physical activity guidelines recommend that adults include muscle-strengthening activity at least two days per week, in addition to regular aerobic activity.
4. Metabolism Is More Than Calories
When people hear “metabolism,” they usually think about how quickly someone burns calories.
But metabolism describes the enormous collection of chemical processes your body performs to keep you alive and functioning.
Sleep, muscle mass, physical activity, nutrition, hormones, medications, illness, and many other factors can influence energy balance and body composition.
That’s why blaming everything on a “slow metabolism” can distract us from something much more useful:
The parts of our lifestyle we can actually influence.

Getting older doesn’t mean you’re destined to have a “broken” metabolism.
Our bodies change with age, but so do our routines, activity levels, muscle mass, sleep, stress, and eating patterns.
Instead of asking:
“How do I speed up my metabolism?”
A better question might be:
“What can I do today to support a healthy, active body as I age?”
Walk more.
Strength train.
Prioritize sleep.
Eat nourishing whole foods.
And perhaps most importantly, don’t assume that getting older means becoming weaker, heavier, or less capable.
